Apostille for importing a Japanese car to Chile

Chile imported 64,720 used vehicles from Japan in 2024, channelled almost exclusively through the free zones of Iquique, Arica, and Magallanes (Punta Arenas). Documentation discipline in Chilean free zones is strict — apostilled documents are routinely accepted as proof of authenticity by SAG, Aduanas, and the Servicio Nacional del Consumidor.

The local authority — Aduanas + Tráfico

In Chile, vehicle clearance is split: Servicio Nacional de Aduanas processes customs entry in the free-zone port; Servicio de Registro Civil issues the título de dominio; the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) regional offices handle plates. None formally require apostille, but apostilled documents materially smooth clearance in the free zones where dealers handle high paperwork volumes.

Why the apostille matters in Iquique

Free zones rely on documentary trust. The MLIT certificate alone is the original Japanese deregistration; the apostille adds the Japanese MoFA attestation that signature, seal, and authority are genuine — making the document equivalent in evidentiary weight to a notarised Chilean public deed. For dealers building reputations with Aduanas, this matters. For private importers, it provides recourse if the vehicle is later challenged.

The process, end to end

You send us a scan of the Japanese Certificate of Export. We confirm feasibility within hours, collect the apostille at the MoFA counter in Tokyo within three working days, then DHL/EMS the authenticated original to your address in Iquique, Antofagasta, Santiago, or wherever you receive paperwork. The total door-to-door cycle is 10-15 days — well within the 30-day Chilean free-zone clearance windows.

Tips for Chilean importers

Many Chilean dealers also import to Bolivia, Peru, or Paraguay (all Hague members). The same apostille is valid in all three downstream markets — useful for re-exporters. Note: the Spanish translation of the apostilled document is still required by Aduanas; we do not handle translation, only the legalisation step in Tokyo. Pair our apostille with a Chilean traductor oficial for the complete document set.
