01 — The Service

A single document, mastered to the letter.

We obtain the Hague Apostille on the Certificate of Export issued by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) for vehicles departing Japan.

The apostille makes the document legally valid for vehicle registration in any country that is party to the 1961 Hague Convention — every Member State of the European Union included.

We work on this one document, exclusively, from our office in Toranomon — eight hundred metres from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs counter. No other services, no upselling: a narrow specialism, fully understood.

Deregistration · Issued when the vehicle is cancelled from the Japanese registry for export.

輸出予定届出証明書

Yushutsu yotei todoke shōmeisho

Export notification · Issued when the vehicle is still registered but its export is pre-notified.

Both are commonly called Certificate of Export. We apostille either equivalently — same MoFA process, same €280 flat fee, same 15-day delivery.

Yamato Apostille handles the Tokyo side: the Hague Apostille on the original Japanese certificate. National document handling (local translation, customs, type approval) remains the importer's part — we focus exclusively on the legalisation in Japan.

05 — Frequently asked

Apostille, Certificate of Export, and importing a Japanese car.

What is the Japanese Certificate of Export?

The Certificate of Export (輸出抹消仮登録証明書, yushutsu masshō kari-tōroku shōmeisho) is the official document issued by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) when a vehicle is deregistered from Japan for export. It proves the car has been removed from the Japanese registry. EU registration offices require this document before issuing local plates on any car imported from Japan.

Why do I need a Hague Apostille for the EU?

For the Japanese Certificate of Export to be legally accepted by registration offices in EU Member States, it must be authenticated through the Hague Apostille — issued by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the 1961 Hague Convention. Without apostille, most EU countries refuse the document and the vehicle cannot be registered. This is the bottleneck of every Japan-to-EU car import.

How long does the apostille on a Japanese Certificate of Export take?

From the moment we receive your scan, the apostille is typically obtained within three working days at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs counter in Tokyo. International courier delivery to your EU address adds three to five working days. End-to-end: roughly one week to ten days, door to door — including JDM enthusiasts, dealer fleets, and classic car imports.

What does the apostille service cost?

€280 flat — a single transparent price covering the full apostille procedure at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo and tracked international courier delivery to your address. No add-ons, no upselling, no quotes — €280, full stop. Payment due only on confirmed delivery. For non-Hague destinations (consular legalisation) or sworn translation, we flag it upfront before we start.

Do you work with private importers, JDM enthusiasts, and dealers?

Yes. We handle both single-vehicle imports for private buyers (classic JDM cars, used Japanese imports, RHD enthusiasts) and bulk runs for European dealers importing multiple vehicles per month. The legal process is identical; we just adapt invoicing, courier scheduling, and delivery frequency to your volume.

Guarantee

Satisfied — or fully refunded.

If the Hague Apostille we deliver is not recognised by your country's vehicle registration authority, and you provide written proof of the rejection, we refund the entire service fee. No questions asked, no friction.

Conditions: the written rejection from the competent registration authority must concern the apostille itself (not a separate issue such as missing translation, missing customs clearance, or vehicle type approval). Refund processed within 14 working days of proof receipt. Courier and government fees are excluded.
